I find it interesting that our brains make 90% of our decisions without our thought process! We constantly make decisions that are safe and familiar to us, especially doing minimal or mundane tasks. Many poor decisions are made as a result of biases and that can sometimes lead to discrimination, like mentioned in the TEDx talk by Adela Sanchez. It's part of being human and having a brain and it takes alot of effort and time to rework our brains to not automatically make these internal claims. "What is considered bossy in a woman is considered leadership quality in a man".
Watching Sheryl Sandberg's TED talk, she immediately discusses how women in society face more difficult choices between professional success and personal fulfillment. Many times, "Men attribute their success to themselves and women attribute it to other external factors."
I also need to add that this speech was released in 2010, perspectives were different at the time, albeit not drastically. Since then, there has been more and more attention drawn to issues like this, but have they really been solved? Yes, the recognization is the great first step towards progress, but the problem solving comes next.
The disparity between home-related work in married couples was also mentioned and it's not a surprise to anyone. However, it is still jarring to hear about and it begs the question: How are we to improve at something that has been an ongoing situation for years and years? Households with these differences in roles and job devotion can improve and it starts with a gradual rewiring of our perspectives.
I was unable to write any information about either of the journals following the videos because I didn't have access to read them. The website stated that I needed a premium account to view the journal information.
